Box Office Weekend: 300 Conquers Peabody In Number, If Not Critics

Lackluster reviews for 300: Rise of an Empire, the sequel to the 2007 big budget story of the 300 Spartans, were not enough to keep audiences away as it earned the top spot at the box office. At an estimated $45.1 million, it beat Mr. Peabody & Sherman which, despite good reviews, earned an estimated $32.5 million, which leaves it at a fair pace behind its $145 million costs. Still, both are doing very well overseas, and likely to make back their costs in worldwide earnings, if not domestically.

300: Rise of an EmpireLiam Neeson is making a good case with Non-Stop, breaking even for its second week with an estimated $15.4 million. The Lego Movie continues to impress, with an estimated $11 million in its fifth week and $225 million in total domestic box office, while Son of God sits in a state of limbo, its estimated $10 million and domestic total of $41.5 million no indicator of success as it has not reported its costs. The Monuments Men, meanwhile, has proven a success, if a minor one, by breaking even with its weekend estimates of $3.1 million.

The Kevin Costner vehicle 3 Days to Kill still has a chance to break even, an estimated $3.1 million bringing it close to its $28 million budget. But it cannot hold a candle to the last three on the list…even as it nears release on DVD and Blu-ray, Frozen remains a fan favorite in theaters, earning an estimated $3 million and $393.1 million in domestic sales, while Best Picture winner 12 Years a Slave landed in ninth with a second wide release, bringing in an estimated $2.2 million, and Ride Along defied its critical smack down with an estimated $2 million, giving it a strong $130 million in domestic take.
