Box Office Weekend: Apes Best Wall Crawler to Take Box Office

The latest film in the Planet of the Apes series, War for the Planet of the Apes debuted in first place this weekend with an estimated $56.5 million. Though that was a bit below the $163 million Spider-Man: Homecoming brought in last week, it was still an impressive number given the competition it faced this week.

War for the Planet of the Apes PosterMeanwhile, the Spider-Man reboot finished in second place, dropping more than 60% to earn $45.2 million. Despicable Me 3 continued respectable business finishing in third place with $18.9 million (giving the film a three-week total of $188 million). Baby Driver fell from third to fourth place, earning $8.8 million (a bit less than the $20+ million it brought in last weekend). The Big Sick improved on its third-week total of $5.2 million by bringing in $7.6 million this weekend and climbing all the way to the fifth spot in this week’s top ten.

Wonder Woman continued to pile on the money with another $6.9 million to bring its seven-week total over $380 million, which was good enough to lock it into sixth place. Newcomer Wish Upon managed $5.6 million despite relatively poor reviews. Cars 3 continued to do respectable, if not spectacular, business with $3.2 million to bring its five-week total to $140 million, which was good enough for eighth place this week.

Transformers: The Last Knight managed another $2.8 million this week, bringing its four-week total to $124.9 million which must, in some small way signify the death (at least on some level) of this franchise. Finally, the Will Ferrell/Amy Poehler vehicle The House took in $1.8 million to bring its three-week total to $23.1 million as it prepares to take leave of the top ten next week.

War for the Planet of the Apes will have stiffer competition next weekend as two auteurs prepare to battle at the box office when Luc Besson’s Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets opens alongside Christopher Nolan’s war epic Dunkirk.
