Box-Office Weekend: Avengers: Infinity War Demolishes Box Office

Avengers: Infinity War broke not only the domestic opening weekend box office record bringing in $250 million this weekend, but it also succeeded in taking in a total of $630 million worldwide, giving it records for both domestic and global openings of all time. The film’s mammoth opening weekend means that the nineteen films that currently make up the Marvel Cinematic Universe have amassed approximately $15.5 billion worldwide.

Avengers: Infinity War posterAfter Infinity War, every other film in this week’s top ten, predictably, dropped dramatically from its performance last week. In second place was A Quiet Place with $10.7 million, which has amassed an impressive $148.2 million during its four-week run. Incidentally, A Quiet Place is also the only film besides the newest Avengers film to finish in double digits this weekend.

The Amy Schumer vehicle, I Feel Pretty, took in $8.1 million, came in third place, to give it a two-week total of $29.6 million, which was a drop of nearly 50% from last week’s performance. Such a steep decline was felt by most of the films in the top ten as the Marvel mountain (consisting of Infinity War and Black Panther) proved just too insurmountable to climb.

In its third week, Rampage finished in fourth place with $7.1 million, to brings its overall total to $77.9 million. Meanwhile, Marvel’s other entry in the top ten, Black Panther, enjoyed a slight resurgence, thanks to Avengers: Infinity War no doubt, to find its way to the fifth spot and a weekend tally of $4.4 million. This gives the film an impressive eleven-week total of $688 million.

The comedy Super Troopers 2 finished in sixth place with $3.6 million, which was a drastic decline, about 76%, from its opening weekend last weekend. Still, it has already made more than the first entry in the series—possibly ensuring another installment. Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare fell to the seventh spot in its third week of release, giving the horror film a domestic total of approximately $35.3 million. The comedy Blockers finished in the eighth spot taking in $2.9 million this weekend, giving it a four-week total of $53.2 million.

Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One fell to the ninth spot earning $2.4 million, raising the sci-fi film’s five-week total to $130.7 million. Finally, the thriller Traffik took in $1.6 million, landing it in tenth place and giving it a two-week tally of $6.8 million. Next week sees the release of the Overboard remake as well as the Charlize Theron-starring Tully. While Tully sees another collaboration between director Jason Reitman, writer Diablo Cody, and star Charlize Theron, Overboard may ultimately prove to be another film in a long line of remakes that just should never have been allowed to happen in the first place.
