Box Office Weekend: Guardians Protect Box Office

Marvel continues its 2014 box office hit parade with another big winner: Guardians of the Galaxy took the top spot for the comic book movie studio with an estimated $94 million and rave reviews. And while it is still a ways off domestically from its $170 million production costs, it nearly made that back in a single weekend counting its worldwide estimated totals. It smashed all other box office take for the weekend, though that does not mean other films were not successful…Lucy, last week’s big winner, continues to make money with an estimated $18.3 million, while Get on Up, the James Brown biopic, made a middling start both with critics and moviegoers with an estimated $14 million, though whether it will be successful depends on how large its unreported budget is.

Marvel's Guardians Of The GalaxyHercules struggles stateside with an estimated $10.7 million, falling well short of its $100 million (though it has accomplished that worldwide), while Dawn of the Planet of the Apes marches on, picking up an estimated $8.7 million. Planes: Fire & Rescue remains a lesser Pixar effort though unlikely to be a box office flop, if it makes at least half of its estimated $6.4 million next weekend. The Purge: Anarchy, however, is relying on the spend less, make more formula that has worked for horror lately, an estimated $5.6 million bringing it $63 million on the domestic market, enough to pay for at least seven more films in the franchise with the same $9 million budget. Sex Tape may still end up breaking even, but the comedy has faced an uphill battle to cover its costs and its estimated $3.6 million will go a ways to breaking up that monotony.

At the bottom of this week’s list, two films vie for the tie-breaking result to come once the official totals are counted, but as it stands, And So It Goes barely edged out A Most Wanted Man with an estimated $3.3 million apiece. Neither film has released budget information, but neither film is making too much of a splash at the box office; despite favorable reviews, A Most Wanted Man has earned around $7 million domestically, and And So It Goes has done $10.5 million in domestic business so far.
