Box Office Weekend: Guardians Sequel Dominates for Second Week

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 dominated the box office for a second consecutive week, bringing in an impressive $63 million, which was ultimately $45 million more than second-place finisher Snatched. This week’s haul brings Guardians two-week total to over $246 million.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2With $17.5 million, the Amy Schumer/Goldie Hawn vehicle, Snatched, performed admirably against the Marvel juggernaut. Guy Ritchie’s take on the Arthurian Legend, King Arthur: Legend of the Sword, pulled in $14.7 million which was good enough for third place (though we speculated it would finish a bit higher last week).

Vin Diesel and The Fate of the Furious took in $5.3 million to bring its domestic total to $215 million. It’s a foregone conclusion that more Furious movies are on the horizon one way or another. The animated The Boss Baby pulls fifth place with $4.6 million.

The rest of the top ten were clumped somewhat tightly together. The highest performing of the lot, Beauty and the Beast, earned $3.9 million, bringing its total box office returns to an impressive $493.2 million. How to Be a Latin Lover brought in $3.8 million, Lowriders earned $2.4 million, The Circle garnered $1.7 million, and Bahuali 2: The Conclusion rounded out the top ten with $1.6 million.

While there’s nothing to suggest that Guardians dominance of the box office won’t continue, it will have a harder time doing so starting this week as director Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi/horror film Alien: Covenant is set to open.
