Box Office Weekend: Jungle Book Remains Top Banana

Disney provided a second week of first place entertainment, as The Jungle Book remained the big winner at the box office with an estimated $60.9 million; it towered over the competition and has brought in $191.5 million domestic gross and $528.5 million worldwide. The Huntsman: Winter’s War came in second, but it was not a close second with an estimated $20.1 million. While it may try to break even on its $115 million budget with overseas dollars, its inauspicious debut (plus plenty of critical disdain) does not spell a bright future. To compare, the likely much lower-budgeted (and better received) Barbershop: The Next Cut only picked up an estimated $10.8 million, but already exceeds the first weekend of The Huntsman in domestic gross by about $16 million.

Zootopia remains a strong contender even after eight weeks, earning an estimated $6.6 million for $316.4 million in domestic gross and passing the $900 million mark worldwide…a feat not accomplished by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which fell to sixth with an estimated $5.5 million. Still, the critically panned superhero epic still holds a slight domestic lead over Zootopia, and both still hold a sizeable lead over fifth-place finisher The Boss, whose estimated $6.1 million adds up to $49.5 million, which has a little ways to go to break even on its costs…a distance that may prove just too far to grab during its theatrical run.

Kevin Costner is still feeling the hurt of Criminal, whose estimated $3.1 million has only totaled $10.9 million in domestic earnings so far, and not likely a profit for the thriller and its A-list cast. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 held for another week, an estimated $2.1 million bringing in a solid $55.4 million; an unremarkable (and compared to the first, disappointing) return, but still likely a profitable one for the romantic comedy.

While Eye in the Sky remained stubbornly in tenth with an estimated $1.2 million, newcomer Compadres managed to make the list. The action comedy (and Mexico-U.S. production) made an estimated $1.4 million in limited release, though whether it quickly fades or gains traction will be seen.
