Box Office Weekend: Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials Burns Up the Box Office

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials may be the winner at the box office with an estimated $30.3 million, but it failed to make much headway with critics, nor did it manage to top the previous film and its $32.5 million opening (though it will likely do well with overseas dollars). Interestingly, the real winner of the box office may well be second-place Maze Runner: The Scorch Trialsfinisher Black Mass. With an estimated $23.4 million, it heralds critical acclaim for long-struggling Johnny Depp, who has not headlined a bonafide hit since the fourth Pirates of the Caribbean film in 2011. And while it has not signaled a
perfect comeback, The Visit is certainly a step in the right direction for M. Night Shyamalan, with a second week estimated take of $11.4 million bringing the running total to $41.4 million on a $5 million budget.

The Perfect Guy entered its second week with a large drop in revenue, but its estimated $9.6 million weekend is still a strong performance for a movie that cost only $12 million to make. Everest, in the meantime, had a very strong limited opening of an estimated $7.6 million (though it has a long ways to go to get back its $55 million costs). In the meantime, critics remain mixed about the faith-based drama War Room, but with an estimated $6.3 million weekend and $49.1 million in gross on a $3 million budget, there is no doubting its success with its intended audience. The success of A Walk in the Woods, though, is not as well known…with an unreported budget, its estimated $2.8 million weekend gross adds to $24.8 million pulled in so far, but with Robert Redford and Nick Nolte involved, its costs could be practically anywhere.

Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation earned an estimated $2.3 million and is a worldwide hit, with a worldwide take of $656.4 million. Straight Outta Compton needs no outside money, its estimated $2 million only a small portion of its outstanding $158.9 million domestic earnings on a $28 million budget. Finally, Grandma, starring Lily Tomlin, came into wide release and proved a strong contender on its own merits. Earning an estimated $1.6 million, even that small amount was enough to make the film a success, only costing $600,000 to make, but that is even small compared to its $3.8 million in total earnings.
