Box Office Weekend: No Good Deed Leads to Good Returns

There might not be much breaking of box office records this weekend (well, except the Guardians of the Galaxy milestone), but returns are better this week than last, led by the critically panned No Good Deed. Starring Idris Elba as a mysterious stranger, the thriller raked in an estimated $24.5 million, already profiting against a $13.2 million budget. In second, Dolphin Tale 2 managed to be a winner with audiences and critics, but not yet against its own budget, bringing in an estimated $16.6 million against $36 million in costs. Guardians of the Galaxy, meanwhile, had to say goodbye to the top slot after a long battle, but it goes away happy; its estimated $8 million at the box office was enough to push it past the $300 million domestic mark and well-cemented as the highest domestic earner of 2014.

No Good DeedOutside of the top three, earnings dropped off quite a bit, but remain strangely grouped; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles fared best with an estimated $4.8 million and Let’s Be Cops followed on its heels with an estimated $4.3 million. Also close were newcomer The Drop, a well-received crime drama with the final screen appearance of the late James Gandolfini, which picked up an estimated $4.2 million, and If I Stay, with an estimated $4.1 million. The Drop is the only odd one out in that it has not released its budget numbers; considering its lackluster start, unless it is incredibly low-budget it has an uphill battle.

In another strange turn of events, the bottom three also have one up in the air production and two winners as they are grouped in the $2 million range: The November Man and its estimated $2.8 million may seem hard pressed to fight against its critical scathing, especially as its lack of budget numbers seems to be more telling with each passing week; The Giver and its estimated $2.6 million may not be Divergent level numbers, but still profitable enough; and The Hundred-Foot Journey, with its estimated $2.5 million, is actually doing better than The Giver overall, earning $49.4 million over an $22 million budget.
