Box Office Weekend: Pets Ain’t ‘Fraid of No Ghostbusters

The Secret Life of Pets is the top draw for a second week in a row; though it dropped to an estimated $50.6 million in revenue, it managed to keep Ghostbusters in a second-place finish with an estimated $46 million. The $144 million production did open to critical praise, but with the news that the film will not be released in China (and the months-long controversy spawned by its original release trailer), it does have a long road ahead to make back its costs. The The Secret Life of Pets PosterLegend of Tarzan, in the meantime, despite three weekends in the top three slots, is still struggling to make any progress in worldwide gross, even with an estimated $11.1 million weekend.

Finding Dory landed in fourth with an estimated $11 million, but the film has now become the highest domestic-grossing animated film of all-time (though worldwide it still lags behind several other luminaries, including Zootopia), earning $445.5 million in the United States alone. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates has not fared quite so well, with an estimated $7.5 million bringing in $31.3 million domestically against a $33 million budget; but while The Purge: Election Year may not be breaking too many records, the third film in the series, with an estimated $6.1 million, is still a knockout, earning $71 million domestically on a $10 million budget.

Central Intelligence is still drawing crowds with an estimated $5.3 million; unfortunately, the critically praised The Infiltrator, starring Bryan Cranston, appears to have stalled out with a rough debut weekend, earning an estimated $5.3 million. The BFG, in the meantime, has bombed out worldwide; an estimated $3.7 million weekend total has added up to $64.4 million in total gross, terrible numbers for a film that cost over twice that in reported budget. Finally, Independence Day: Resurgence picked up an estimated $3.5 million…enough for the blockbuster to break even on its reported budget, but a far cry from the monumental 1996 megahit it was spawned from.
