Box Office Weekend: Thanksgiving Weekend Grateful for Some Big Hits

Note: Any estimate given in brackets represents how much the movie made over the five-day weekend; all other estimates represent the three-day weekend.

While revenue over the three-day weekend may have been down from last week overall, Thanksgiving added a nice bit of revenue to the box office, with both The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 and Skyfall helping this weekend to be the highest earning Thanksgiving weekend of all time. Breaking Dawn Part 2 came up with an estimated $43.1 million [$64 million], while Skyfall took in an estimated $36 million [$51.1 million]. But those two big winners were not the only top draws…Lincoln, in its second week, made good numbers as well, besting its opening weekend with an estimated $25 million [$34.1 million] and on its way to box office success.

Several other big name projects debuted, most of which have a long ways to go before breaking even, but with strong out of the gate numbers nevertheless. Rise of the Guardians gave families something new to see, and in good numbers with an estimated $24 million [$32.6 million], while Life of Pi, Ang Lee’s adventure film about a boy, a tiger, and the lifeboat they share picked up an estimated $22 million [$30.5 million]. Both films have to make up $100+ budgets, as does veteran Wreck-It Ralph, but the long-suffering Disney film is finally pulling its own weight, its estimated $16.8 million [$23 million] finally getting it close to a domestic profit, though its small overseas numbers have helped it limp into the black at long last. Red Dawn, on the other hand, may not have as much to worry about…despite dirt-poor reviews, the remake of the 1984 cult classic made a decent enough start with an estimated $14.6 million [$22 million], with only a $66 million budget to make up.

The bottom holds two strong players and the wide release of a critical favorite. Flight continued its upward climb with an estimated $8.6 million [$11.4 million], putting it above Silver Linings Playbook, which opened to 351 new theaters and an impressive jump in revenue with an estimated $4.6 million [$5.9 million], and Argo remained on the list for its seventh week, the popular and critically acclaimed film earning an estimated $3.9 million [$5.1 million].
