Box Office Weekend: Three Weeks In and Straight Outta Compton Is Still A Hit

Straight Outta Compton has proven itself box office champ again and, with an estimated $13.2 million this past week, a monetary winner as well. At $134.1 million in domestic earnings so far, it has blown away its $28 million costs. The closest contender was newcomer War Room, a faith-based film lambasted by critics, but at an estimated Straight Outta Compton$11 million for the weekend more than made back its $3 million production costs. In third, Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation picked up an estimated $8.3 million, and also released its budget info. Costing $150 million, the film appears to be a domestic flop with only $170.4 million made so far, but worldwide it has done much better, with $479.4 million in worldwide gross.

Owen Wilson stretches his action chops in No Escape, but the action-thriller debuted to an estimated $8.2 million and mixed to low critical results…and it is also the only movie in the top ten to have not released its budget (but for the Weinstein Company, lack of budget numbers is nothing new). Sinister 2 defied expectations in another way – by being more expensive than assumed from last week. Costing $10 million, more than twice the cost of the original film, the sequel has still yet to break even, even with an estimated $4.7 million over the weekend. But it is a lot closer to breaking even than either The Man from U.N.C.L.E. (estimated $4.4 million) and Hitman: Agent 47 (estimated $3.9 million), both of which are flopping both here and abroad (though Hitman: Agent 47, at $35 million, has a much lower hill to climb compared to U.N.C.L.E.’s $70 million).

In the bottom three (and a strange near three-way-tie), The Gift continues to impress, with an estimated $3.1 million bringing the $5 million thriller to $36 million in domestic revenue. Jurassic World made a return to the top ten with an estimated $3.1 million, and while it appears unlikely to dethrone the top two films of all-time, it is cementing its legacy in third place with a solid lead. Finally, Ant-Man earned an estimated $3.1 million, and while its $169.2 million should be nothing to be ashamed of, the well-received entry from Marvel Studios still remains the least successful of the “Phase 2” superhero films.
