What We Liked

Not too darn much, but there were a few slight chuckles

What We Didn't Like

It just never really took off, but it certainly did crash

Let me just start out by saying I’m a huge fan of Melissa McCarthy, I absolutely loved her in Bridesmaids (2011). Unfortunately, the new film Tammy is not her best work. She plays pretty much the same role here that she has before, a tough but really mushy big girl that is forever getting into trouble. Tammy was written by McCarthy and her husband, Ben Falcone (who also has a small role and directs as well). There is nothing extraordinary here folks, there were a couple of chuckles, but nothing absolutely side splitting.

TammyTammy (Melissa McCarthy) starts the film having one thing go wrong after another; she loses her job, finds out her husband is having an affair, and wrecks her car. She is determined to get out of Dodge. She runs to her parents’ house and ends up hitting the road with her alcoholic grandmother Pearl (Susan Sarandon), heading straight for Niagara Falls. Sarandon does do a great job at being old (note: the ankles she has in the movie are not her own). However, it is still very easy to detect Sarandon’s beauty and sex-appeal outside of her polyester, ill-fitting shirts and pants. The shenanigans ensue and it would have been great to have something hilarious happen, but alas it did not. Lots of attempted slapstick comedy, with not much slapping or sticking to entertain.

Shortly into the adventure the two ladies run into some would-be hunks at a bar, Bobby (Mark Duplass) and his father Earl (Gary Cole), in a scene that ultimately proving Pearl can still catch a man’s attention. But, in reality, it’s just kind of gross. Also, Earl is married to Bobby’s mother, a sick woman that kind of doesn’t really fit into the film’s story-line. On a high note, there were some interesting cameo appearances such as Dan Aykroyd and Kathy Bates. Both did fine with their characters, but were nothing to write home about.

So, the bottom line is that the film Tammy is definitely a rental. Lower your expectations and save your money.
