What We Didn't Like

The new comedy The Internship is more about Google than anything else. It’s almost like one great big 119-minute-long commercial. After this film even I wanted to work for Google. For fans of the duo Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, you will enjoy them together again. This is, however, not their best work, and they certainly are not getting any younger. With that said The Internship is slightly above average in humorous content.

The InternshipBilly McMahon (Vince Vaughn) and Nick Campbell (Owen Wilson) are aging, out-of-work salesmen, who find themselves at a pitfall in their lives. Having nothing to lose they apply for an internship at Google. Unbelievably they are accepted. Along with the many other applicants they have an entire summer to prove they are worthy of Google to be offered a permanent position. All the interns are referred to as Nugles. The large group is then broken into smaller teams all of them being extremely young and much more technologically advanced and internet savvy than either Billy or Nick.

Dana (Rose Byrne) is a current Google employee and the love interest for Nick. An unlikely match as far as I’m concerned given that Wilson is obviously much older than Byrne. Mr. Chetty (Aasif Mandvi) is perfect in his role as the ornery head of the summer interns. Josh Brener as Lyle is another Google employee that is also on the Google interns team. He is, for lack of a better term, the team nerd that is just plain silly and not that humorous. Max Minghella as Graham, the nemesis of the story, is very cocky and what could be a positive performance also stands out as boring. My favorite character was Josh Gad as Headphones, not a large roll, but very effective and well done. Hopefully this will catapult his career as I’m looking forward to seeing more of him. Of course, I cannot fail to mention one of my all time favorites – Will Ferrell – makes a laughable guest appearance that you won’t want to miss.

So did Google have to pay an arm and a leg to be such a large part of this film? Apparently not reports CNN, however they did have a lot of input in the film and were very hands-on in so far as many Google employees were used as extras. The bottom line is that Google is an excellent place to work! Free food, free workouts, excellent napping facilities, and very cool bikes you can ride around on in the compound. It’s like a playground for young adults!

There is a lot of silly humor in The Internship, some good and some definitely not so good. But all in all the film makes for an entertaining summer movie. Is it a must see? Probably not, but it is what it is, not horrible, but not outstanding either.
