Movie Review: War Horse

It’s a curious thing to think that an award-ready Steven Spielberg World War I epic based on a raved-about stage play that is being released at Christmas could somehow still be considered under-the-radar. Coming just one week after his collaboration with Peter Jackson’s special effects team, ...

The Many Faces of Ebenezer Scrooge: A History of A Christmas Carol on Film

Charles Dickens enjoyed great popularity in his lifetime, and that popularity hasn’t waned to this day. Despite an incredibly prolific assortment of characters and stories, which have been adapted to stage and screen over the years, perhaps the most iconic of them all (and certainly one of the ...

Movie Review: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

I certainly had high expectations for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo going in. Granted, we’ve all been burned by unsuccessful movie-to-book adaptations before, usually because the filmmakers got lazy and didn’t quite change enough to allow the film to stand on its own, but I had a feeling th...

Movie Review: The Adventures of Tintin

I did not love this movie, but it was okay. The Adventures of Tintin is a boring movie. I felt like I had seen the same story before, just with different characters trying to find something else. This movie is about a boy named Tintin who bought a model ship. Then his model ship got stolen and he looks for clues with his dog Snowy, who is always helping him out. They get into a crazy adventure because of this guy who knows that the model ship holds a secret. The movie was adventurous, but uninteresting. I liked the ending because the movie was finally over.

Things are picking up steam at the box office after a two-week decline, but the big end of the year blockbusters still are not performing up to expectations. Sherlock Holmes: A Games of Shadows debuted in first place, but only managed to bring in an estimated $40 million…much better than New Ye...

Movie Review: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows

Like most people, I was dubious at first about Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes back in 2009. The idea of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master sleuth being turned into an action hero seemed like some kind of cultural sacrilege. But when the film came out and received surprisingly positive reviews, I ...

Movie Review: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol

The latest installment in Cruise’s Mission: Impossible series of movies, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, feels a little out of place coming out around Christmastime. Why? Because, from start to finish, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and team offer up one of the best summer blockbuster action t...

Movie Review: Shame

Though The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo has laid claim as “the feel bad movie of Christmas” in its cheeky teaser trailer, that boast may actually belong to British director Steve McQueen’s second feature Shame. A downbeat character study of an emotionally-distant sex addict in New York City,...

Movie Review: Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked

Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked was a really exciting and fun movie. I loved every part of it. I really can’t tell you my favorite part because the whole movie was great. In this Chipmunk movie Alvin, Simon, Theodore and the Chipettes get to go on a cruise for a vacation with Dave (Jason Lee) who tries to watch over them. As usual, Alvin starts causing lots of trouble and ends up stranded on an island with the rest of the Chipmunks and the Chipettes. This is where the movie gets more interesting and even funnier. Will the Chipmunks and the Chipettes ever be found or will they stay on the island forever?
