By now, we’ve all seen the first official trailers for two of next year’s most anticipated movies, right? In one corner, you have Christopher Nolan putting the finishing touches on his interpretation of the world of Batman with The Dark Knight Rises, and in the other corner you have Peter Jac...
Continue ReadingThis Christmas weekend almost had an unhappy ending, but an extra fourth day spelled good news for this year compared to last; an estimated $184.7 million was made this weekend, almost $70 million of it from this Monday alone (as compared to 2010, which made $20 million more in the three day week...
Continue ReadingIt’s a curious thing to think that an award-ready Steven Spielberg World War I epic based on a raved-about stage play that is being released at Christmas could somehow still be considered under-the-radar. Coming just one week after his collaboration with Peter Jackson’s special effects team, ...
Continue ReadingCharles Dickens enjoyed great popularity in his lifetime, and that popularity hasn’t waned to this day. Despite an incredibly prolific assortment of characters and stories, which have been adapted to stage and screen over the years, perhaps the most iconic of them all (and certainly one of the ...
Continue ReadingI certainly had high expectations for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo going in. Granted, we’ve all been burned by unsuccessful movie-to-book adaptations before, usually because the filmmakers got lazy and didn’t quite change enough to allow the film to stand on its own, but I had a feeling th...
Continue ReadingI did not love this movie, but it was okay. The Adventures of Tintin is a boring movie. I felt like I had seen the same story before, just with different characters trying to find something else. This movie is about a boy named Tintin who bought a model ship. Continue ReadingThings are picking up steam at the box office after a two-week decline, but the big end of the year blockbusters still are not performing up to expectations. Sherlock Holmes: A Games of Shadows debuted in first place, but only managed to bring in an estimated $40 million…much better than New Ye...
Continue ReadingThe Detroit Film Critics Society is pleased to announce the Best of 2011 winners and nominees in ten categories. The society was founded in spring 2007 and consists of a group of twenty-two film critics (our very own Mike Tyrkus is a proud member of the society) who write or broadcast in the Detr...
Continue ReadingLike most people, I was dubious at first about Guy Ritchie’s Sherlock Holmes back in 2009. The idea of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s master sleuth being turned into an action hero seemed like some kind of cultural sacrilege. But when the film came out and received surprisingly positive reviews, I ...
Continue ReadingThe latest installment in Cruise’s Mission: Impossible series of movies, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, feels a little out of place coming out around Christmastime. Why? Because, from start to finish, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) and team offer up one of the best summer blockbuster action t...
