Weekend Box-Office: Hop Still On Top!

The Easter season is still a good time to be a bunny … the family romp Hop remained at #1 for the second week in a row, making $21.7 million and making a profit domestically. But the top ten has been a mixed bag all around, with half of the titles being winners in the eyes of the critics and half losers. Hop, despite its numbers, hasn’t wowed critics, and neither did the 2nd place finisher, Arthur, the remake of the Dudley Moore classic starring Russell Brand. But Arthur proved a decent enough draw with $12.6 million, putting it slightly ahead of a much more favorably reviewed film, Hanna. Hanna stars Cate Blanchett as a woman raised from childhood to be the perfect assassin; it earned $12.3 million in its debut.

Soul Surfer opened to $11.1 million and middling reviews; but the story of a young girl (AnnaSophia Robb) who loses her arm to a shark while surfing fared much better than the R-rated fantasy parody Your Highness. While Highness didn’t do open too poorly at with $9.5 million, it has a long ways to go to make up the $49.9 million it reportedly cost to make, and critical word of mouth certainly wouldn’t help.

The bottom five, save for Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Rodrick Rules, have all well-received; however, only Source Code has yet to prove itself profitable in the United States (though with $9 million this weekend, chances look good for the thriller to fix that problem very soon). Limitless has earned over double its costs (with $5.7 million this weekend aiding in that), Diary has done the same (getting a $4.9 million boost), and The Lincoln Lawyer finally shows a profit in its fourth weekend after making $4.6 million this weekend.
