Weekend Box-Office: On A Slow Weekend, Breaking Dawn Still Drawing Crowds

The numbers might be miniscule this week, but with no new releases to speak of (barring the NC-17 rated Shame, which didn’t make the Top 10), the top contenders remained about the same. The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1 remained the top draw for the third week in a row, though it dropped considerably from its $60+ million earnings last week, picking up only an estimated $16.9 million. It has nothing to be concerned about, however; for a late-year release, its earnings are much closer to summer blockbuster numbers, with a worldwide total gross of $588 million.

The Muppets retained its  second-place spot as well, though its drop was more considerable compared to its last week’s earnings, taking in an estimated $11.2 million. However, Hugo swapped places with Happy Feet Two, the movies gaining third and fifth place with estimates of $7.6 million and $6 million, respectively. Arthur Christmas sits neatly between the two with an estimated $7.4 million, but Hugo and Arthur Christmas, despite pulling ahead this week, have each made about $25 million domestically in two weeks. Happy Feet Two has made more in three weeks than both films combined ($51.7 million).

Jack and Jill slipped to sixth, and despite scathing reviews has managed to make a decent (if not profitable) amount, with its estimated $5.5 million pushing it to a $64 million domestic total. The Descendants, however, has pulled up a few places despite a drop in revenue, pushing ahead of bigger name titles for an estimated $5.2 million. And of those three last place finishers, this week has been good for two of them…Immortals finished eighth with an estimated $4.4 million, breaking into the black, while Puss in Boots continues to further its edge with $3.1 million (it broke even on its $130 million budget last weekend). Tower Heist also seems likely to break even domestically, but this week it only came close, taking ninth and an estimated $4.1 million. However, even at that, with its worldwide totals keeping it in good stead, it’s Eddie Murphy’s first non-Shrek movie since 2007 not to bomb out completely at the box office, which may spell good news for his career and the rest of the ensemble cast.
