The horror film A Quiet Place easily topped the weekend box office, finishing $25 million ahead of its nearest competition. The film, written and directed by John Krasinski (who also stars alongside Emily Blunt), brought in an impressive $50 million its opening weekend. Most horror movies that have gone onto make considerable amounts at the box office have not enjoyed such a profitable opening weekend, so Paramount must be feeling optimistic about the future of A Quiet Place.
Elsewhere, Marvel’s Black Panther continues to perform like the juggernaut it is, holding onto fourth place with $8.4 million this weekend. This gives it an eight-week domestic total of $665.4 million and a worldwide total somewhere around $1.3 billion. Finishing in fifth place with $8.4 million as well, was I Can Only Imagine, which now boasts a four-week tally of $69.1 million.
Tyler Perry’s latest offering, Tyler Perry’s Acrimony, fell sharply in its second week to sixth place, bringing in $8.1 million, about half of what it earned in its first week of release. The Ted Kennedy inspired drama, Chappaquiddick managed to land $6.2 million in its first week of release, which puts it firmly in seventh place on our list.
The animated Sherlock Gnomes earned $5.6 million over the weekend, giving it a three-week total of $33.9 million as it heads towards an exit from the top ten in the very near future. Meanwhile, Pacific Rim: Uprising plummeted all the way to the ninth spot with $4.9 million, giving it a three-week total of $54.9 million, which must disappoint given the high hopes for a sustainable franchise the studio must have had.
Finally, Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs cracked the top ten with $4.6 million, giving it a three-week total of $12 million after expanding to over 500 locations. The film goes nationwide next week so it may enjoy more good fortune in the coming weeks though it may face some competition next week as the Dwayne Johnson vehicle Rampage opens alongside the horror film Truth or Dare from production house Blumhouse.
