The three-day President’s Day holiday this year belonged to Alita: Battle Angel which stood atop the box-office weekend with an estimated $27.8 million debut. Despite the impressive opening tallies, the film is still burdened with a $170 million price tag that it could be hard-pressed to earn enough to turn a profit. Overall though, the holiday box-office was the worst collective showing for a President’s Day weekend since 2004.
The weekend’s fourth-place spot belonged to the Taraji P. Henson vehicle, What Men Want, which added $10.9 million to raise its two-week total to an estimated $36.2 million. Debuting in fifth place this weekend was the horror sequel Happy Death Day 2U with an estimated $9.8 million. In sixth place was the thriller Cold Pursuit which added $6 million to bring its two-week tally to $21.1 million.
The seventh spot belongs to the Kevin Hart/Bryan Cranston vehicle The Upside, which made $5.6 million over the weekend to give the comedy/drama a six-week total of $94.2 million. Dropping down to the eighth spot was M. Night Shyamalan’s Glass, which, in its fifth week of release added $3.9 million to give it a total of $104.5 million. Similarly, the horror film The Prodigy limped out of its second week to the ninth spot earning just $3.2 million to give it a total of approximately $11 million as it prepares to leave the top ten next week.
Finally, the Oscar-nominated Green Book, held onto a spot in the top ten with a $2.8 million showing this weekend, which was good enough for a tenth-place finish, giving it a fourteen-week cumulative total of $65.8 million.
Next weekend will see the wide-release of the much-anticipated sequel How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World, which should again shake up the box-office weekend for the better as the film has been doing solid business since being released internationally six weeks ago and could portend a solid, lengthy stateside performance.
