Box-Office Weekend: Apes Knocked Down By an IF

Box Office Weekend

Newcomer IF managed to unseat Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes by just $9.0 million to claim the top spot of the box-office weekend.

In its first weekend of release, Paramount Pictures’ IF took in $35.0 million, which was enough to wrestle the number one slot away from Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, which brought in $26.0 million over the weekend. Despite the slide to second place, the film has still taken in $101.2 million for 20th Century Studios over the last two weeks. Debuting in third place with $12.0 million was the Lionsgate Films offering The Strangers: Chapter 1. All of this pushed last weekend’s number two film, The Fall Guy, to fourth place where it added $8.5 million over the last three days to bring its three-week total to $63.0 million for Universal Pictures. Also falling two spots was Challengers, which landed in fifth place where it added $2.9 million to raise its four-week total to $43.5 million for United Artists Releasing.

The third debut of the weekend, the Amy Winehouse biography, Back to Black, finished just behind Challengers with $2.8 million over the weekend for Focus Features. Meanwhile, last weekend’s fourth-place film, Tarot, tumbled all the way to seventh place were it made $2.0 million for Screen Gems. This gives the film a three-week total of $15.4 million. Falling three spots and landing in eighth-place was Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. The film added $1.7 million for Warner Bros. in its eighth week of release to lift its overall total to $194.4 million. The final debut of the weekend, The Blue Angels, claimed ninth place with $1.3 million in it first weekend of release. Finally, after finishing in sixth place last weekend, the Lionsgate Films product, Unsung Hero, landed in tenth place this weekend where it added $1.1 million to bring its overall total to $19.1 million for the studio.

Four films were knocked out of the top ten this weekend as last weekend’s seventh- through tenth-place films all failed to make this weekend’s list. After eleven weeks, Kung Fu Panda 4 fell from the seventh spot after bringing in $192.7 million for Universal Pictures. Meanwhile, Civil War couldn’t hold onto eighth place, instead settling for a six-week total of $67.3 million for A24. After three weeks in re-release and amassing an additional $12.9 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, last weekend’s ninth-place film, Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace, couldn’t crack the top ten again this weekend. Finally, after five weeks, last weekend’s tenth-place film, Abigail, leaves the top ten after bringing in $25.6 million for Universal Pictures.
