Not only did Black Panther once again finish atop of the weekend box office earning $41.1 million over the past weekend, but it has now made over $1 billion globally, after debuting in China this past weekend. The Marvel blockbuster has now been locked in the top spot since it was released four weeks ago, a feat that was last accomplished in 2015 by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.
The Strangers: Prey at Night also debuted this past weekend to the tune of $10.5 million. This was in line with most expectations, though middling reviews suggest that the second film in The Strangers series may become a stranger to the top ten sooner rather than later.
These two new releases dropped Red Sparrow from second-place to fourth this weekend earning $8.2 million. Despite the drop, he Jennifer Lawrence film raised its worldwide total to $82.9 million. In its third week of release, the comedy Game Night rounded out the top five earning $7.9 million. The family-friendly Peter Rabbit finished in the sixth spot with $6.8 million to bring its five-week total to $93.5 million. In its second week of release, the Bruce Willis-led Death Wish added $6.6 million despite falling to the sixth spot from the third. The final new-release debut of the weekend, The Hurricane Heist, debuted at number eight with $3.2 million.
Despite falling from the sixth to the ninth spot in the top ten, Annihilation managed to bring in $3.2 million to raise its three-week total to $26.1 million as it prepares to bow out of the top ten. Finally, the box-office stalwart of the past twelve weeks, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle finished in the tenth spot to bring its cumulative total to a whopping $397.3 million.
Next weekend sees the release of Tomb Raider, which will certainly shake up the box office once again.
