Box-Office Weekend: Black Panther Wins Another Weekend

Box Office Weekend

Adding an estimated $108 million to its coffers, Black Panther, easily topped the weekend box office for the second week in a row. The continued dominance of the latest entry to the Marvel canon allowed it to become only the fourth film ever to bring in over $100 million in its second weekend of release, this also makes it the fifth highest grossing title domestically in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Elsewhere, the weekend’s other new releases finished with decent showings over the weekend.

The comedy Game Night finished in a distant second place behind Black Panther, with $16.6 million. Despite falling to third place, the animated Peter Rabbit brought in $12.5 million to raise its three-week total to respectable $71.3 million. The Natalie Portman-starring Annihilation finished with a somewhat unimpressive $11 million in fourth place, but could benefit from decent word-of-mouth to gain some traction in the coming weeks. Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle plummeted (if you can call it that, given its gross to date) to the sixth spot from fourth with $5.7 million over the weekend. The film has made $387.3 million during its ten-week run so it’s likely not sweating the dip at this point.

The action film The 15:17 to Paris fell from fifth to seventh this week, but still brought in $3.6 million and raised its three-week total to $32.3 million. Meanwhile, The Greatest Showman continued to bring in audiences to the tune of an additional $3.4 million to raise the ten-week total for the Hugh Jackman vehicle to $160.8 million. In ninth place was the fantasy-ish film Every Day with $3.1 million, this is the first release for the newly relaunched Orion Pictures.

Lastly, the animated film Early Man, finished in the tenth spot (falling from seventh) with $1.7 million and a two-week total of $6.8 million. This undoubtedly spells the end of a run in the top ten for the underperforming film. Three films exited the top ten this week. Maze Runner: The Death Cure leaves after earning $56.3 million in five weeks while the horror-film Winchester brought in a disappointing $23.8 million in four weeks. Finally, Samson leaves the top ten after a stay of only one week in its second week of release.

Next weekend look to add two new films to the mix, the Jennifer Lawrence starring Red Sparrow and the Eli Roth re-imagining of Death Wish starring Bruce Willis.
