Box-Office Weekend: Captain America Takes Over

Although the same film adorned the top of the box-office weekend top ten for two consecutive weeks prior, a new film stands firmly in the number one spot as Captain America: Brave New World took in $75.5 million more than its closest competition just prior to the Presidents’ Day holiday.

In its first weekend of release, Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures’ latest Marvel release, Captain America: Brave New World easily took control of the box-office weekend top ten by bringing in $88.5 million over the pre-holiday weekend. This was more than adequate to best second-place finisher Paddington in Peru which debuted over the weekend to the tune of $13 million for Sony Pictures Releasing. Meanwhile, last weekend’s second-place film, Heart Eyes, dropped to third where it brough in $10 million for Sony Pictures Releasing, raising its two-week total to $21.5 million. Last weekend’s top film, Dog Man, however, fell three spots to land in fourth place with $9.7 million earned this weekend. The gives the DreamWorks Distribution product a three-week tally of $66.8 million. Debuting in fifth place was CMC Pictures’ Ne Zha 2 with $7.2 million.

After finishing in third place last weekend, the Universal Pictures release, Love Hurts fell three spots to claim sixth place this weekend with $4.4 million. This brings the film’s two-week total to $12.3 million. In its ninth week in release, Mufasa: The Lion King also dropped three spots to finish in seventh place where it added $4.2 million over the weekend to lift its overall total to $240.8 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. Sony Pictures Releasing saw One of Them Days drop two spots and land in eighth place this weekend where it took in $3.0 million, giving it a five-week total of $43.5 million. Falling four spots this weekend, Companion finished in ninth place with $1.9 million over the weekend, bringing its three-week total to $18.8 million for Warner Brothers. Finally, in its second week of release, Becoming Led Zeppelin dropped from seventh to tenth place this weekend with $1.8 million, giving the film a two-week total of $5.5 million.

As happened last week, the bottom three films from seven days ago all failed to make this weekend’s top ten. First of all, Flight Risk has brought in $27.9 million for Lionsgate over the last four weeks, but couldn’t continue to crack the top ten again this weekend. After nine weeks in release, Paramount Pictures’ Sonic the Hedgehog 3 boasts an overall total of $234.5 million, yet it too fell from this week’s top ten. Finally, with twelve weeks in the books, Moana 2 has taken in a grand total of $457.7 million for Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures domestically before dropping from the box-office weekend top ten.
