With an estimated $31 million opening weekend, the theatrical incarnation of Downton Abbey easily topped the box-office weekend, besting its nearest competitor by over $12 million. The film also gave Focus Features it’s most successful opening of all time. The other new releases over the weekend—Ad Astra and Rambo: Last Blood—did well enough, finishing just behind Downton Abbey and delivering solid openings of their own.
The horror film It Chapter Two finished its third week of release with a $17.2 million showing over the weekend and a fourth-place finish. This gives the Stephen King-inspired sequel a cumulative total of $179.2 million—a sum that also makes it one of the highest grossing R-rated horror movies of all time.
Elsewhere, the comedy Hustlers added $17 million over the weekend, landing it in fifth place of this week’s countdown. This gives the Lorene Scarfaria-directed film a two-week total of $62.6 million. The live-action version of The Lion King continued to enjoy solid business as it finished in sixth place, taking in $2.6 million during its tenth weekend of release and lifted its overall total to $537.6 million.
The raunchy comedy Good Boys added another $2.5 million to give the film a six-week total of $77.3 million as well as a seventh-place finish on our list. The action film Angel Has Fallen took in $2.4 million over the weekend to give the Gerard Butler vehicle a five-week tally of $64.7 million and a spot in this week’s countdown at number eight.
Meanwhile, Overcomer ended the weekend bringing in $1.5 million, giving the drama a five-week total of $31.6 million. Finally, also taking in $1.5 million over the weekend was the latest installment of the “Fast & Furious” inspired films, Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw, which finished in the tenth spot of the box-office weekend. The film has now amassed $170.6 million over the course of its eight weeks in release.
Next weekend will see the arrival of Abominable from Universal, which will undoubtedly shake up the top ten a bit, but don’t expect too must of drastic change from this weekend’s players.
