For the second straight week, Walt Disney’s Encanto stood atop the box-office weekend, again besting Ghostbusters: Afterlife.
The latest film in the seemingly endless “Resident Evil” series – Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City – pulled in $2.7 million over the weekend, dropping it from fifth place to seventh. This gives the property a two-week take of $13.2 million. Climbing one spot, from eighth to seventh, was the science-fiction film Dune: Part One, which made $1.8 over the weekend and now sports a seven-week total of $104.6 million. Last week’s sixth-place film, Clifford the Big Red Dog, fell two spots to finish in eighth this weekend with $1.8 million. The film can now bark about a four-week total of $45.7 million. Elsewhere, Will Smith and King Richard dropped from seventh to ninth place with $1.2 million over the weekend. This gives the story of Richard Williams a three-week total of $13.4 million. Finally, the second newcomer to the top ten this past weekend, Sword Art Online: Progressive – Aria of a Starless Night, finished in the final spot earning $1.1 million in its first weekend of release.
Only two films were forced out of the weekend box-office top ten over the past few days. After finishing in ninth place last week, the latest James Bond adventure – No Time To Die – leaves the top ten with a nine-week total of $158.6 million. Finally, the seemingly always-present Venom: Let The Be Carnage, dropped from the tenth spot last week, but still boasts a ten-week tally of $210.9 million. Next week sees the long-anticipated arrival of Steven Spielberg’s version of West Side Story, which is sure to shake up the box office yet again.
