Box-Office Weekend: Fast & Furious Franchise Unseats the King

There is a new film stop the box-office weekend top ten yet again as the “Fast & Furious” franchise has proven viable for at least one more installment. Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw opened this weekend to the tune of $60.8 million. This put the film over $20 million above its nearest competitor, The Lion King.

Despite slipping from the top spot, Disney’s live-action reboot of the beloved animated classic added $38.2 million over the weekend, giving it an impressive three-week total of $430.9 million. The film also did very well internationally, adding $765 million allowing it to approach a $1.2 billion global tally. In its second week of release, Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood took in $20 million over the weekend, which gives the film a two-week total of $78.8 million.

The third film to drop one spot down the top ten over the weekend, Spider-Man: Far from Home, added $7.8 million. This gives the latest adventure of Spidey and company a five-week total of $360.3 million. Also falling one spot, from fourth to fifth, was Disney’s other offering on this list, Toy Story 4, which added another $7.2 million, giving the film a seven-week cumulative total of $410.1 million.

The Beatles-inspired love story Yesterday, held firm at number six, bringing in $2.4 million over the weekend, giving it a six-week total of $67.9 million. Meanwhile, last week’s newest arrival to the top ten, The Farewell, climbed three spots up to the seventh spot with a $2.4 million haul over the weekend, giving the film a four-week total of $6.8 million. Dropping from fifth to eighth place was the horror film Crawl, which added $2.2 million over the weekend to give it a four-week tally of $36.1 million.

Meanwhile, Disney’s final entry in the top ten, the live-action Aladdin, added $2 million over the weekend, allowing it to finish in ninth place. This gives the film an eleven-week total of $350.4 million. Finally, the horror sequel Annabelle Comes Home, dropped to the final spot win our top ten earning just under $1 million over the weekend. The film no doubt leaves the box-office weekend top ten next week with its current six-week total of $71.6 million to console it.

Elsewhere, the comedy Stuber drove away from the top ten this weekend, finishing with $500,000 for the weekend. This gives the film a grand total of $21.8 million since opening just three weeks ago on July 12.

Next weekend will undoubtedly be chock full of new entries as several films are set to either be released or expand to bigger markets, including: Dora and the Lost City of Gold from Paramount, The Art of Racing in the Rain from Fox, Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark from Lionsgate, The Kitchen from Warner Brothers, and Brian Banks from Bleecker.
