Tyler Perry’s latest offering to the Madea canon, A Madea Family Funeral, made an impressive bid for the top spot at the box office this weekend but was unable to fell the proverbial dragon as How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World held onto the top spot for the second week in a row.
Elsewhere, Alita: Battle Angel finished in a distant third place with $7.0 million, giving the film a three-week total of $72.2 million, which again points to the film being unable to turn a profit as it seems to have no chance whatsoever of reaching its $170 million budget, let alone turning any sort of a profit. If that wasn’t already a foregone conclusion.
The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part brought its four-week total to $72.2 million with a $7.0 million fourth-place finish over the weekend. Fresh off its Oscar win, Green Book pulled in another $4.7 million to slide back briefly into the top five again this week. In its third week of release, the wrestling-heavy family dramedy Fighting with My Family pulled in $4.7 million to raise its overall total to $14.9 and finish in sixth place over the weekend. The Rebel Wilson comedic vehicle Isn’t It Romantic finished its third week of release in the sixth spot tied with the horror film Greta, as both films took in $4.6 million. Isn’t It Romantic now sports a three-week total of $40.3 million while the Chloë Grace Moretz starring Greta debuted this weekend.
Taraji P. Henson and What Men Want added $2.7 million to lift the film’s four-week tally to $49.6 million as the comedy fell to the ninth spot. Finally, the horror sequel Happy Death Day 2U dropped to the final spot in this week’s top ten, earning $2.5 million. This gives the film a three-week total of $25.3 million and seems to suggest it will depart the top ten soon (probably next week).
Next weekend will see the wide-release of Marvel’s Captain Marvel, starring Brie Larson, which will more than likely dominate the box-office weekend and end the run for more than one or more of the films currently in the top ten.
