Box Office Weekend: Latest Alien Film Takes Top Spot from Guardians

Box Office Weekend

Alien: Covenant barely got past Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2 to lay claim the number one spot at the box office for at least one weekend. The latest installment in the long-running Alien franchise brought in $36 million, which was just a bit over the week three total for Guardians of $35.1 million.

Coming in at number three was the new romantic drama Everything, Everything, which made $12 million. Meanwhile, the Amy Schumer vehicle Snatched brought in $10 less than it did next week which allowed to drop all the way down to fourth place.

The latest entry in the surprisingly lucrative Diary of a Wimpy Kid franchise, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul brought in $7.6 million in its opening weekend that almost allowed it to finished ahead of Snatched. Guy Ritchie’s King Arthur: Legend of the Sword continued to underwhelm bringing in another $6.9 million to bring the film’s total to around $27 million.

The juggernaut The Fate of the Furious took in an additional $3.2 million, bringing its total to just under $220 million. The Boss Baby robbed unsuspecting moviegoers of $2.8 million while Beauty and the Beast added to its impressive totals ($497.8 million) with another $2.4 million.

While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 and Alien: Covenant should continue to do well in coming weeks (especially Guardians), the new Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, starring Johnny Depp should make a strong play for the top box office spot next week.
