Box-Office Weekend: Moana Makes Waves

Box Office Weekend

A new film has claimed the top spot of the box-office weekend top ten. With a debut total $55.5 million over its closest rival, Moana 2 easily took control of the weekend box office.

Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures saw Moana 2 bring in a total of $135.5 million over the course of its opening weekend and a total of $221 million overall. This pushed last weekend’s top film, Wicked to second place where it took in $80 million for Universal Pictures, bringing the film’s two-week tally to $111.2 million. Meanwhile, Gladiator II fell from second to third place where it added $30.7 in its second weekend of release to give the Paramount Pictures product an overall total of $111.2 million. Red One also dropped a spot to land in fourth where it brought in $12.9 million, raising its three-week tally to $76.1 million. Lionsgate saw The Best Christmas Pageant Everclimb a spot to claim fifth place this weekend with $3.3 million, giving the film a four-week total of $32 million.

In its second weekend in release, the Angel Studios release 6 Bonhoeffer: Pastor. Spy. Assassin. crept into sixth place where it brought in $2.4 million, raising its overall total to $9.7 million. Meanwhile, Sony Pictures Releasing saw Venom: The Last Dance fall two spots to land in seventh place this weekend where it added $2.2 million to raise its six-week total to $137.9 million. This movement saw A24’s Heretic drop a spot and land in eight place with $956,797, giving the film a four-week total of $26.8 million. Universal Pictures’ The Wild Robot similarly dropped one spot, landing in ninth place where it took in $670,000 to raise its ten-week total to $142.5 million. After five weeks in release, Searchlight Pictures saw A Real Pain creep into the top ten in the final spot as the film brought in $665,000 to raise its overall total to $6.1 million.

Two films were pushed from the top ten this weekend as last week’s ninth- and tenth-place films both failed to make the cut this weekend. Focus Features saw Conclave bring in $30.1 million over the last six weeks before falling from the ninth spot this weekend. Meanwhile, After bringing in $68.7 million for Paramount Pictures during the course of the past seven weeks, Smile 2 drops from the top ten as well.
