Box-Office Weekend: Morbius Takes a Bite

As quickly as The Lost City claimed to top of the box-office weekend seven days ago, it was displaced this weekend by newcomer Morbius by $24.3 million.

During its debut weekend, the Jared Leto vehicle brought in $39.1 million as Morbius finished in a solid first place despite not-so-positive reviews. Displaced to the second spot was last week’s top film, The Lost City which garnered $14.8 million and lifted its two-week tally to $54.6 million. The Batman, despite dropping a spot to third, still took in $10.8 million in its fifth weekend of release to raise its total to $349 million (moving it up ten spaces to #58 on the list of top domestic grosses of all time. Meanwhile, holding the fourth spot of the top ten was Uncharted which added $3.6 million over the weekend to list its seven-week total to $138.9 million. Similarly, remaining steadfast in the fifth spot was Gekijouban Jujutsu Kaisen 0 as it added $2 million to its coffers to raise its three-week total to $29.7 million.

Plummeting from third place to sixth this weekend was last week’s newcomer RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) which managed to add another $1.6 million over the last three days to raise the film’s two-week total to $11.1 million. Moving up one spot to land in seventh place was Marvel’s Spider-Man: No Way Home which added another $1.4 million to lift its sixteen-week total to $802.7 million as it moves ever so closer to Avengers: Endgame and second place on the list of top lifetime grosses. Meanwhile, last week’s seventh-place finisher, Dog, dropped to the eighth spot earning $1.3 million over the weekend. The Channing Tatum vehicle now boasts a seven-week total of $60.1 million. Falling three spots to finish in ninth-place was the horror film X which dropped from the sixth spot last week but still added $1 million over the weekend to raise its three-week total to $10.4 million. Finally, in its second week of release, Everything Everywhere All at Once cracked the top ten with $1 million over the weekend, finishing just behind X.

Two films left the box-office weekend top ten over the last three days. Sing 2 dropped from the ninth spot to fall off the list for the first time in quite a long while. The film still sports a fifteen-week tally of $161.7 million so there probably aren’t too many distraught by the no show in the top ten. Similarly, Infinite Storm departed the top ten in its second week of release with a grand total of $1.4 million to show for its troubles.
