The all-female reboot of the “Ocean’s” franchise, starring Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett, Ocean’s 8, debuted in the top spot with an impressive $41.5 million showing over the weekend. This easily bested the $15.2 million that second-place finisher Solo: A Star Wars Story brought during its third weekend of release. This gives the Star Wars film a to-date total of $176.1 million, which must be a bit disappointing to Disney, given the hype surrounding the title, and the franchise.
Avengers: Infinity War fell from fourth to fifth this week, but still added $6.8 million to its seven-week total, which now stands at a staggering $654.7 million. Dropping from third all the way to sixth place in its second week of release is the Shailene Woodley-starring survival tale Adrift, which earned $5.1, giving it a two-week total of $21.7 million.
Another film falling a few spots in top ten and ultimately finishing in seventh place, is the Diane Keaton, Jane Fonda, Candice Bergen, Mary Steenburgen starring comedy Book Club, which added $4.2 million to its domestic haul, giving it a four-week total of $56.9 million. The action, crime, thriller Hotel Artemis from writer/director Drew Pearce debuted in the eighth spot with $3.2 million for its opening weekend. The action/horror/sci-fi hybrid Upgrade dropped from sixth to ninth place, bringing in $2.2 million this weekend, giving it a two-week tally of $9.2 million.
Finally, the Melissa McCarthy-led Life of the Party fell from the seventh to the final spot of this week’s top ten adding just $2.1 million, giving the comedy a five-week total of $50.3 million. Elsewhere, three films made departed the top ten this week: Breaking In, Action Point, and Overboard. Furthermore, despite the turnover at the box office this weekend, next weekend looks to provide an even bigger jumble as the Pixar sequel Incredibles 2 debuts along with the new comedy Tag, one of which will certainly knock another stalwart from the current top ten.
