Hoping for a fifth week atop the box-office weekend, Spider-Man: No Way Home had to settle instead for a second-place finish as the film was soundly overtaken by newcomer Scream, which managed to secure $30.6 million during its opening weekend. The latest film in the “Scream” series succeeded in besting No Way Home by almost $9.8 million.
Debuting in sixth place over the weekend was the animated Japanese film Ryû to sobakasu no hime (Belle). The film took in $1.6 million and some change. This was enough to best the Kurt Warner biopic, American Underdog, which added $1.6 million in its fourth week of release and dropped to a seventh-place finish over the weekend. The film now boasts a total of $21.1 million. Falling a spot to finish in eight place was the remake of West Side Story, which managed $948,000 in its sixth week of release, lifting its grand total to $33.8 million. Holding steady in ninth place was Licorice Pizza with $883,000, which gives the film an eight-week total of $9.6 million. Finally, plummeting from sixth to finish in tenth place this weekend was The Matrix Resurrections which added $815,000 to give the fourth film of the series a four-week ttoal of $35.8 million.
With Scream debuting on top of the box-office weekend, and the unexpected reappearance of Ryû to sobakasu no hime in the top ten, only two films departed this weekend’s list. After reappearing briefly in the top ten, Ghostbusters: Afterlife again leaves the top films of the weekend, but still sports an eight-week total of $126.1 million. Meanwhile, House of Gucci leaves the top ten after amassing $50.9 million over the past eight-weeks.
