A new film took control of the box-office weekend as Smile debuted in first place by a margin of $14.7 million, pushing last weekend’s top film to a distant second place.
Debuting in sixth-place over the weekend was Ponniyin Selvan: Part One with a $4.0 million opening weekend. Last weekend’s fourth-place film, Barbarian, dropped several spots to finish in seventh with $2.8 million over the last three days. This gives the film a four-week total of $33.1 million. Last week’s seventh-place film fell one spot as Bullet Train finished in eighth place with $1.4 million over the weekend. This brought the film’s nine-week tally to $101.3 million. Meanwhile, the heroes of Dc League of Super-Pets lost a spot and finished in ninth-place with $1.3 million. The animated film still lays claim to a ten-week total of $91.7 million though. Finally, adding another $1.2 million to its overall total, Top Gun: Maverick dropped a spot and finished in tenth-place as it brought its nineteen-week total to $713.5 million, cementing itself in fifth place on the list of top lifetime domestic grosses.
This box-office weekend, three films were displaced from the top ten. After only three weeks in release, and a fifth-place finish last weekend, the horror film Pearl departs with an overall total of $8.3 million. Meanwhile, last weekend’s sixth-place film, See How They Run was pushed from the list with a three-week haul of $7.9 million. Finally, the sequel Minions: The Rise of Gru could not hold onto the tenth spot of the weekend box office and departs with a fourteen-week total of $366.8 million.
