Despite finishing atop the Memorial Day weekend box office, the latest entry to the “Star Wars” canon from Disney and Lucasfilm, Solo: A Star Wars Story, failed to break the $100 million plateau, managing just $83.3 million. Albeit, this was still around double what second-place finisher Deadpool 2 brought in with $42.7 million. All in all, it must be considered a disappointing opening given the lofty expectations for the film.
Book Club finished its second-week with $9.5 million over the weekend, which was good enough to land it in fourth place. Meanwhile, the Melissa McCarthy-led comedy Life of the Party took in $5.1 million to claim fifth place and a three-week tally of $39.1 million.
Gabrielle Union did solid business again with Breaking In, adding $4.1 million to the film’s three-week take of $35.6 million. The, ahem, comedy, Show Dogs finished its second weekend with $3.1 million to brings its tally to $10.7 million. Just behind those pesky pooches was the unwarranted Overboard with $3.0 million. This gives the remake of the 1987 comedy a four-week total of $41.5 million which is, sadly, almost twice as much as the original made when it was first released.
Not on the level of Deadpool 2 or Avengers: Infinity War, but still doing amazing business just the same is ninth-place finisher A Quiet Place which added another $2.2 million to its $180 million domestic total. And, finally, Magnolia’s RBG again took the final spot in this week’s top ten with $1.1 million, giving it a four-week total of $5.6 million. It’s also the only film to stand pat in the top ten this week as everything slipped down one spot (with Rampage vacating the list altogether) to make room for top-finisher Solo: A Star Wars Story. Expect another shake up next week, though probably not nearly as drastic, as we’ll have at least five new films being released.
