Spider-Man: Homecoming brought the web slinger back to the big screen in a big way with a near-$120 million opening weekend ($117 million to be exact). This is the second largest opening for a Spider-Man feature, just narrowly pushing past the 2002 original directed by Sam Raimi.
The Minions and Despicable Me 3 laid a firm claim on second place with $34 million; almost triple that of third-place finisher Baby Driver at its $12.8 million haul. Gal Gadot in Wonder Woman continues to do well at the box office, finishing in fourth place, bringing in another $10.1 million as the film inches closer to the $400 million mark. Transformers: The Last Knight managed to land an additional $6.3 million to raise its three-week total to $118.9 million, which some may say is a far cry from the pace of its predecessors.
The third film in the Cars saga, the aptly named Cars 3, picked up enough passengers to earn $5.6 million and raise its four-week total to $133.7 million. Meanwhile, the, ahem, comedy, The House added another $4.8 million, bringing its overall gross to $18.6 million. The indie comedy The Big Sick continues to do decent business with $3.7 million as it prepares to expand next week.
The shark-infested 47 Meters Down rose its domestic total to $38.5 million adding $2.8 million over the weekend. Finally, Sofia Coppola’s The Beguiled, starring Nicole Kidman, received an expanded release, earning an additional $2.1 million. One of these movies is sure to fall out of the top ten next week as the apes return to dominate the box office with War for the Planet of the Apes.
