The new horror film The Nun led the weekend box office with an impressive $53.5 million opening weekend. The film toppled the franchise’s opening weekend record of $41.8 million set by the first film in the series, The Conjuring in 2013. The weekend’s other debut, Peppermint, delivered a solid opening for Jennifer Lawrence.
The monster-shark starring film The Meg added another $6 million to its earnings to lift its five-week total to $131.6 million which puts it in fourth place. Just behind that, in the fifth spot with $4.5 million is Searching, which also sports a three-week total of $14.3 million. The sixth spot in the tope ten belongs to the Tom Cruise-led action-film Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which added $3.8 million to its seven-week $212.1 million total.
The family-friendly Disney offering Christopher Robin added $3.2 million, bringing its six-week tally to $91.7 million. The drama Operation Finale took in only $3 million during its second week of release, dropping it to the eighth spot and giving it a two-week total of $14.1 million as it looks likely to depart the top ten in the very near future. The family adventure Alpha added $2.5 million to bring its four-week total to $32.4 million and landing it firmly in ninth place this weekend.
Finally, director Spike Lee’s latest film, BlacKkKlansman, took in $1.6 million to lift its five-week total to $43.5 million as it too looks poised to depart the top ten soon. Next weekend’s release of the sci-fi action film The Predator, the Blake Lively/Anna Kendrick vehicle A Simple Favor, and the Matthew McConaughey-led White Boy Rick should shake up the top ten booting some of these underperformers from the list next week.
