Box-Office Weekend: “Way of Water” Holds Lead

Despite some position jostling and a couple films being pushed from the top ten, the box-office weekend remained relatively secure as Avatar: The Way of Water held the top spot for a sixth consecutive weekend.

With $20.0 million earned this weekend, Avatar: The Way of Water solidified its claim as the thirteenth highest domestic grossing film of all time, with $598.3 million. The film held first place by a margin of $8.5 million over second-place finisher Puss in Boots: The Last Wish which climbed to second place over the weekend with $11.5 million, bringing its five-week total to $126.5 million. This pushed M3GAN to third place with $9.8 million over the weekend. The horror film now has a three-week total of $73.3 million. Debuting in fourth place was the thriller Missing with $9.3 million to show for its opening weekend. This debut pushed Tom Hanks and A Man Called Otto to fifth place in its fourth weekend as it added $9.0 million to brings its overall total to $35.3 million.

Sinking to sixth place was Plane with $5.3 million. This film now has a two-week tally of $19.5 million as it looks poised to leave the top ten in the not too distant future. Meanwhile, House party fell a spot to seventh earning $1.8 million over its second weekend to raise its overall total to $7.2 million. The second debut in this weekend’s top ten, Gekijôban Tensei shitara slime datta ken or That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime the Movie: Scarlet Bond opened with $1.5 million over the weekend, just narrowly besting the ninth-place film by $0.2 million. The Whale similarly dropped a spot as it finished the weekend in ninth place with $1.28 million, bringing its seven-week total to $13.2 million. Finally, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever fell from seventh-place to the final spot of the weekend box office as it finished just behind The Whale with $1.25 million over the weekend. The film now lays claim to an eleven-week total of $451.7 million.

Two films were forced from the top ten this weekend as Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody fell off the list after finishing in eighth place last weekend and amassing $23 million during five weeks in release. Meanwhile, last weekend’d tenth-place film, Waltair Veerayya failed to make the cut this weekend after bringing in $1.1 million in its inaugural weekend of release.
