Yet again, a blockbuster that everyone predicts will champion the weekend comes in and does just that as Wonder Woman, directed by Patty Jenkins and starring Gal Gadot, easily assumed the top spot at the box office this weekend. Amassing an impressive $100.5 million, the first solo film story of everyone’s favorite Amazon princess finished well ahead of the pack and set the standard for the rest of this summer’s blockbuster hopefuls. In fact, it can also boast the sixteenth largest opening weekend for a comic book adaptation, and the sixth highest if you don’t count sequels.
The latest Alien film, Alien: Covenant brought in an additional $4 million to bring its total to a less-than-stellar $67.3 million during its three-week run. Everything, Everything continues to do solid, if not spectacular, business earning an additional $3.3 million to bring its total to a respectable $28.3 million. The Goldie Hawn/Amy Schumer comedy, Snatched, lost only one spot in the top ten, falling from seventh to eighth place with $1.3 million.
The final two spots in the top ten were taken by Diary of a Wimpy Kid: The Long Haul and King Arthur: Legend of the Sword which both brought in around $1.2 million each. Beauty and the Beast fell out of the top ten, but has still earned over $500 million. Next week continues the summer blockbuster bonanza with the Tom Cruise-led horror/action film The Mummy which will undoubtedly aim to knock Wonder Woman from the top spot.
