When certain films are released, mostly those of kid-centric variety, critics tend to forget that they’re not necessarily the film’s target audience. So, we here at CinemaNerdz decided we needed the critical viewpoint of a true member of the movie’s intended demographic. Thus, we turn the reins over to Miranda Clarke, age 9, as she shares with us her views on the new film “Mr. Popper’s Penguins.”
Mr. Popper (Jim Carrey) is a character who is special because he gets penguins that can do really cool things. Mr. Popper was first sent only one penguin. He wanted to send the penguin back, but the person who sent the penguins thought he was asking for five times more penguins than he had. Mr. Popper freaks out when more penguins are sent. When his kids meet the penguins they fall in love with them and Mr. Popper decides to keep the penguins. The penguins subsequently change Mr. Popper’s life. Taking care of the penguins helps him to be more fun and his kids then want to spend more time with him because he becomes a better dad. Ultimately, Mr. Popper stood up for his penguins like you should for your family.
One of my favorite scenes is when Mr. Popper makes the zoo official punch himself. Another favorite is the dancing scene: “Step ball change. Step ball change. Word!” These are funny scenes and make me feel like I want to be part of the film.
If you get penguins as crazy as Mr. Popper’s be sure to have many head counts so you don’t lose any. Nimrod is my favorite penguin because he runs into things a lot, which is hilarious. Loudy, another penguin, is VERY loud and loves to hear her own noises. SQUAWK! The penguin called Lovey is cuddly and shows his love for Mr. Popper and Mr. Popper’s kids. All the penguins are really funny and wacky. Be prepared to laugh a lot, maybe even fall off your chair. But, the penguins poop a lot (eeewwwww!!!)!
