The Preview Reel: I Feel Pretty and Super Troopers 2

The Preview Reel

Welcome to this week’s “Preview Reel” column, wherein we look at the week’s upcoming wide-release movies. Rampage and A Quiet Place were neck and neck at the box office last weekend, but it was the Dwayne Johnson blockbuster that got the best of John Krasinski’s horror sensation. Those two will likely continue doing great business until Avengers: Infinity War debuts next week as this week’s slate is looking a little weak. Neither Amy Schumer’s I Feel Pretty or the stoner comedy sequel Super Troopers 2 will make a ton of noise at the box office, but let’s see if either are worth your time and money.

I Feel Pretty

What we are excited about: Amy Schumer has lost some of her star power over the last few years, but that doesn’t mean she’s not funny anymore. There’s a reason she became a comedic superstar from her show Inside Amy Schumer and her breakout Trainwreck (2015), she can make people laugh. She’s hit a little bit of a rough patch with her panned Netflix comedy stand-ups and last year’s bomb Snatched (2017), but she has too much talent to keep her on a losing streak for long. Her new film, I Feel Pretty, probably isn’t going to get her back to her previous high, but we’re hopeful Schumer can still get us to laugh a few times.

What we are worried about: The trailers just don’t look very funny. It’s a strange story that we’re not totally sure where they are going with, but the bottom line is that it doesn’t look funny. Comedy trailers have the challenge of needing to show humorous moments while not trying to give all the best jokes away. Many trailers unfortunately do give away many of a film’s best jokes, and if that’s the case with I Feel Pretty, then there really isn’t much to be excited about.

The Buzz: Most of the film buzz online is surrounding A Quiet Place, Rampage, and the forthcoming Avengers: Infinity War, so this feels like a week designed for everyone to catch their breath. There are no reviews as of this writing, and there isn’t much buzz surrounding this movie, so we’ll predict a low $10 million opening.

Final Thoughts: Amy Schumer could use a win, but we doubt I Feel Pretty will be it.

Super Troopers 2

What we are excited about: This writer has never seen the original Super Troopers (2001)—a travesty in some eyes—but that movie has built quite a large cult following of devoted fans. They have eagerly been waiting for a big-screen sequel, and it’s finally here (on 4/20 no less). The trailers seem to highlight plenty of high-jinx (pun intended) and it looks to be a crowd-pleasing adventure for fans.

What we are worried about: If you aren’t a fan of the original film, then this is probably not for you. This movie doesn’t seem to be all that interested in gaining new fans but rather simply pleasing the fans of the original. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just doesn’t cast a wide net—one that we’re not a part of.

The Buzz: The first movie was a cult hit and one that has stood the test of time, but we’re not sure that’s going to guarantee box-office success this time around. The first movie premiered to $6.2 million 16 years ago, and with no reviews or buzz surrounding the second installment, we don’t think the new film will reach that number. Look for an opening around $5 million.

Final Thoughts: If you’re a fan of Super Troopers, have fun with Super Troopers 2. If you aren’t, you can probably skip this comedy sequel.
