Some things in January do not change. While Ride Along managed to defy the odds and make a record-breaking score in its debut weekend (and continued to do so this weekend with an estimated $21.2 million at the box office), the only big new release fell amid the typical path of January “blockbusters.” I, Frankenstein, did not even breach the top five, landing in sixth with an estimated $8.3 million, and at $65 million to make, stands to be a financial flop (and is already a critical flop).
Along with Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, The Wolf of Wall Street, the weekend’s ninth-place film, has also made back its costs thanks to overseas business, but it may still break even domestically, getting closer to the $100 million mark with an estimated $5 million. Everything else fell along predictable lines; big winner American Hustle had a miniscule drop with an estimated $7.1 million for the weekend, August: Osage County stayed in eighth with an estimated $5 million, and Devil’s Due dropped by a wide margin with an estimated $2.8 million, but with profit to spare thanks to its $5 million costs.

- The Nut Job…$12.3 million
- Frozen…$9 million
- Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit…$8.8 million
- I, Frankenstein…$8.3 million
