Box Office Weekend: Apocalypse at the Box Office

Memorial Day weekend is usually the kick-off of the summer blockbuster season, but considering the hype leading up to it, X-Men: Apocalypse did not draw the crowds that have been appearing for other Marvel-based ventures. At an estimated $80 million, it brought in less than X-Men: Days of Future Past did Memorial Day weekend of 2014 (in fact, its four-day total was less than the three-day total of the previous film), but despite a mixed critical reception at the box office it has done well enough overseas to ensure the movie will likely break even, though far from a runaway success. Things are less impressive in the cards, though, for Alice Through the Looking Glass, the sequel to the 2010 live action Tim Burton adaptation. At an estimated $34.2 million, it looks to fall well shy of the impressive worldwide haul of the original…so much so, in fact, that worldwide it still has not even made close to the $170 million price tag. And despite landing in third this week, The Angry Birds Movie has been a surprising hit with its worldwide earnings, an estimated $24.6 million bringing in $229.5 million and counting.

Fourth place belongs to the highest earner of the top ten, Captain America: Civil War. With an estimated $19.7 million for the weekend and $1.1 billion worldwide, it remains a high point in the Marvel crown. Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising, with an estimated $11.4 million, does not look like it is close to replicating the success of the original, but with a worldwide haul of $77.2 million, it could still be a success even at double the $18 million budget of the original movie. The Jungle Book (estimated $9.2 million), in the meantime, is reminding everyone of the staying power of Disney, as between this, Captain America: Civil War, Alice Through the Looking Glass, and Zootopia (in tenth with an estimated $1.1 million), it is responsible for nearly $3 billion in worldwide revenue in the top ten alone.

The Nice Guys slid into seventh with an estimated $8.1 million, though despite its good reviews does not appear geared to be a runaway success. Money Monster, on the other hand, managed to break even worldwide with an estimated $5.6 million. Finally, in ninth, Love & Friendship, the critically acclaimed adaptation of the Jane Austen comedy, entered wide release and made an uptick in revenue with an estimated $3.1 million, though where it goes from here remains to be seen.
