Critics may have had sharp words for the latest superhero movie (this time from DC Comics rather than Marvel Studios), but even that word of mouth could not stop Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice from having a bang up weekend. With an estimated domestic haul of $170.1 million (and $421.4 million worldwide), and the highest opening weekend for a March release, it is still looking to be a financial success. Zootopia had to settle for a second-place finish (and a distant finish at that with an estimated $23.1 million), but the well regarded Disney venture is still making good box office bank and, counting a $696.7 million worldwide take, likely a very strong success. In less spectacular news, the sequel to My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 was not receiving the best of reviews, and while not likely to top the success of the previous film, an estimated $18.1 million opening weekend may prove to be a success on its own
Miracles from Heaven slid to fourth, but not before proving itself financially viable, with an estimated $9.5 million giving it $34.1 million over a $13 million budget. The Divergent Series: Allegiant, in the meantime, is likely not as big a success despite a higher domestic gross, as a similar $9.5 million estimate, adding to $46.6 million domestically, probably falls well short of its costs (if it is anything like the $86-$110 million costs of the previous movies). In the meantime, the success of 10 Cloverfield Lane is as mysterious as its twists and turns, as an estimated $6 million adds to a $56 million domestic gross…though considering its focus on suspense and claustrophobic atmosphere, it likely leans towards lower budget success.
Deadpool, despite a mere $5 million estimate, remains the strongest film in the top ten, with $349.5 million domestic gross, while London Has Fallen (estimated $2.9 million) will certainly need a few weeks in the foreign box office to make up its rough ride at the box office, with only $55.6 million made so far against a $60 million budget. In the meantime, two limited release films saw an uptick to make the list…Hello, My Name is Doris, a dramatic comedy with Sally Field in the title role, picked up an estimated $1.7 million, while the Helen Mirren political thriller Eye in the Sky landed in tenth with an estimated $1 million.
