Box Office Weekend: Batman v Superman Plummets But Remains On Top

Box Office Weekend

Finally feeling the effects of its critical reception, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice took a major nosedive, dropping to an estimated $52.4 million for its second weekend. However, the $250 million budgeted film has managed to draw major ticket sales, bringing in $261.5 million domestically and $682.9 million worldwide. Zootopia, in the meantime, has been a bit more successful overall in its five weeks in the box office with $275.9 domestically and $787.6 million worldwide, but this week had to settle for second place with an estimated Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice Poster$20 million. My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2 stayed in third with an estimated $11.1 million, and while it still looks far from repeating the success of the original film, its $36.5 million domestic earnings are likely still a profitable take, if it remained as low budget as its predecessor.

God’s Not Dead 2 debuted to a heavy critical backlash and an estimated $8.1 million…a fairly high debut for a faith-based film, but not as high as the original film. Comparatively, Miracles from Heaven earned an estimated $7.6 million and has made a profitable showing on a $13 million budget. The Divergent Series: Allegiant, in the meantime, struggles on a likely high (but unreported) budget, with an estimated $5.7 million and a worldwide gross of $136.7 million, while 10 Cloverfield Lane remains a mysterious presence, with an estimated $4.8 million bringing in $63.6 million on an unreleased budget.

The latest spoof film (this time of the Purge films), Meet the Blacks, debuted with a rough critical and financial launch, earning an estimated $4.1 million. In the meantime, Eye in the Sky landed in ninth with an estimated $4.1 million with a major uptick in revenue and theater release. Finally, Deadpool got an estimated $3.5 million, and in worldwide revenue is now the highest earning R-rated film of all-time (though not domestically; that still remains The Passion of the Christ from 2004).
