Two new releases gave a dipping box office just the push it needed as two critically acclaimed films, Big Hero 6 and Interstellar, came up with the numbers to pick up a lousy October (though not enough to make them domestically successful). Big Hero 6 made a splash with an estimated $56.2 million and Interstellar gained an estimated $50 million, though amazingly both were budgeted the same at a massive $165 million apiece, meaning they have a lot of ground to make up (though worldwide earnings are looking good for Interstellar, at least, with $132.2 million). Still, these two mega-hits did the heavy lifting this weekend as no other film broke the $10 million mark; even the highest earning film in the current top ten, Gone Girl, only earned an estimated $6.1 million.
In a surprising turn of events, good news came after all for Keanu Reeves and John Wick; its reported budget came in at $20 million, meaning the estimated $4.1 million this weekend and a $34.7 million domestic take means an end to a string of critical and/or financial flops for the actor. Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day also managed to pull off much of the same, an estimated $3.5 million bringing in a decent $59.2 million domestically; unfortunately, The Book of Life will fall short domestically, an estimated $2.8 million bringing in $45.2 million in gross against a $50 million budget, a somewhat sad exclamation point for producer Guillermo del Toro.
