Big, noisy, and hollow. While that might easily describe the critical reaction to Gods of Egypt, only the last can truly describe its box office take. While the solid earner and acclaimed Deadpool took the weekend yet again with an estimated $31.5 million, the $140 million-costing blockbuster Gods of Egypt failed on all fronts, bringing in a domestic estimated total of $14 million and
Risen took a mild drop with an estimated $7 million, though it has much headway to break even on its $20 million costs…though it has less of a hill to climb than Eddie the Eagle. Despite positive reception, Eddie the Eagle debuted at an estimated $6.3 million…and with $23 million in costs to make up, the underdog Olympic drama is looking just about as unlikely a success as its titular character.
Triple 9 did not make much waves critically or financially, the police action thriller pulling in an estimated $6.1 million on an unreported budget. And while doing only mild work here, How to Be Single (estimated $5.2 million) is getting a bounce from overseas earnings and is close to breaking even in worldwide gross. The Witch, in the meantime, while garnering critical praise, is earning about as much as can be expected from an early year horror release, with an estimated $5 million bringing it to a $16.6 million total (which, for a horror film, could be quite good, all things considered).
In the last two slots, Race is finding itself dropping quickly with a second week estimate of $4.3 million (and a domestic total of $13.9 million on unreported budget numbers). Below it, The Revenant took in an estimated $3.8 million, but at $170.5 million and the second highest domestic earner of the top ten, it has very little reason to be concerned after a worldwide successful run.
