Box Office Weekend: Jurassic World a Dino-Sized Megahit

Box Office Weekend

The lull that began June has ended. Jurassic World may not have been the critical darling the original film was over twenty years ago, but its opening weekend box office numbers blew past those of all three previous films and even bested Avengers: Jurassic WorldAge of Ultron with an estimated $204.6 million. Meanwhile, Spy, the hit of last week, barely made a ripple this weekend with an estimated $16 million, and San Andreas did not even score on the Richter scale with an estimated $11 million.

Only three films currently on the list have reported their budgets, which does not bode well for most of them. Of the three that did, Mad Max: Fury Road (seventh, estimated $4.3 million) is doing okay counting overseas dollars, while Avengers: Age of Ultron (eighth, estimated $3.6 million) is doing very with $1.4 billion in worldwide revenue, and Tomorrowland (ninth, estimated $3.4 million) is flunking out regardless of where it is showing, with a worldwide total less than its $190 million costs.

Of the rest, Insidious Chapter 3 did the best with an estimated $7.3 million, and big winner Pitch Perfect 2 slid only slightly with an estimated $6 million in revenue. Entourage is not feeling much love either, entering week two with an estimated $4.3 million and $25.9 million on domestic earnings. A new face to the top ten did emerge, the Brian Wilson bio pic, Love & Mercy, sneaking into tenth place with an estimated $1.8 million. With only $4.8 million banked, it is probably not a big box office success, but like the other unreported budgets, only time will tell.
