Box Office Weekend: Lego Movie Holds It Together for Another Strong Weekend

The Lego Movie continued to wow audiences for a second weekend in a row, the family film earning an estimated $48.8 million at the box office and has now grossed more than double its $60 million costs domestically (even though worldwide it has made little impression). It held off romantic newcomer About Last Night to an estimated $27 million, though at $12.5 million to make, even that was enough to guarantee the David Mamet-inspired remake to be a success. The same could not be said of third-place finisher RoboCop, which, with an estimated $21.5 million, did not benefit from mixed reviews as it falls well short of its $100 million costs. However, unlike The Lego Movie, it is doing very well in overseas business, with $96.3 million in worldwide sales, meaning it is unlikely to be a bomb at the end of its theatrical run.

The Monuments Men held onto a little more business than usual, dropping to only an estimated $15 million, but still falls well short of its goals, considering its cast, while Ride Along only suffered an even more miniscule drop from last weekend to an estimated $8.8 million. In between debuted the remake of the notorious 1981 romantic drama Endless Love, which picked up an estimated $13.4 million and very little else, receiving even worse critical acclaim than its predecessor and possible box office failure (its budget remains unreported). Along the same lines, Winter’s Tale came in seventh with an estimated $7.8 million, and failed to capture much goodwill from audiences and critics. Interestingly enough, its budget remains unreported as well.

The final three on the list may be at the bottom, but in terms of success, they may as well be tops. Frozen earned an estimated $5.9 million, making its grand domestic haul of $376 million look that much better, while Lone Survivor’s estimated $4.1 million brings it ever closer to tripling its budget costs in domestic gross. And while not on par with those in terms of total gross, That Awkward Moment managed to defy critical panning thanks to its $8 million micro budget, its estimated $3.3 million giving it $21.4 million in domestic box office, making it a modest success in its own right.
