The studio that brought you Minions knocked the House of Mouse from atop the box office, as The Secret Life of Pets took the top spot with a strong showing, bringing in an estimated $103.2 million domestically. In fact, Finding Dory found itself in tight competition with the critically panned The Legend of Tarzan. In second place with an estimated $20.6 million, The Legend of Tarzan is still nowhere near breaking even on its costs, but is still showing
Zac Efron found little help from critics with Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates, but the R-rated comedy still pulled an estimated $16.6 million…though it has some ways to go to make back its $33 million costs. The Purge: Election Year (estimated $11.7 million), on the other hand, is doing well enough that it could pass the previous films in the franchise in terms of domestic gross, already ahead of the pace of the second (and highest-earning) film in the series. Regardless, it is a financial winner with $58.1 million earned domestically against a $10 million budget…as is Central Intelligence (estimated $8.1 million), which has passed the $108.3 million mark and continues to push ahead.
Independence Day: Resurgence (estimated $7.7 million) remains a distant gleam from the powerhouse performance of the original; with a few more weekends in the top ten, it might be able to break even on its production costs. Good reviews, in the meantime, are not enough to salvage The BFG; the latest motion capture effort from Spielberg is doing well with critics, but sinking financially, with an estimated $7.6 million adding up to only $38.7 million domestically and $50.6 million worldwide…a pittance on a $140 million budget.
The Shallows is not just treading water despite a ninth-place finish, with an estimated $4.8 million weekend and $45.8 million domestic total against a $17 million budget. But Bollywood entered the top ten once more with the 283 theater release of Sultan, which picked up an estimated $2.2 million for the weekend, but a five-day release domestic gross of $3.2 million so far.
