The critically divisive Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice fell to second place with an estimated $23.4 million…topped by comedienne Melissa McCarthy and The Boss. With an estimated $23.5 million, it just barely bested the superheroes, but is seeing much worse critical response overall. Zootopia, in the meantime, fell to third with an estimated $14.4 million, and in a shocking turn of events, lost the highest grossing film in the top ten status to Batman v Superman by a $600k margin.
The Divergent Series: Allegiant is looking a bit better financially (at least, in worldwide gross) as it adds an estimated $3.6 million, but with an unreleased (but likely $100 million) budget, it should still come up short against its costs. Despite falling to ninth with an estimated $3 million, 10 Cloverfield Lane is actually doing much better than Allegiant in domestic earnings with $68 million in gross. Finally, Eye in the Sky sees itself hovering in the final spot with an estimated $2.8 million…though not making much bank overall ($10.4 million in five weeks), the thriller is likely relying on strong critical acclaim and potential award-season recognition than pure profit.
